9 best Zendesk alternatives for customer support teams in 2026
Nine alternatives to Zendesk, compared on seat price, the AI agent each includes, channels and billing, with the option of keeping Zendesk and adding an AI agent.
Key takeaways
- Want the closest like-for-like helpdesk at a lower seat price than Zendesk: Freshdesk from $19 per agent a month billed annually, or Freshdesk Omni from $29 with live chat and WhatsApp.
- Small team or tight budget: Zoho Desk, free for 3 users and paid from $7 a user, or Help Scout, free for up to 5 users.
- Support run from the CRM: HubSpot Service Hub, with its customer agent from Professional at $90 a seat billed annually, or Salesforce Service Cloud, with Agentforce from the $195 Core edition.
- Shopify store: Gorgias, priced by tickets from $10 a month, with an AI Agent that edits, cancels and reships Shopify orders.
- Keep Zendesk and add an AI agent that resolves tickets across email, chat, voice and WhatsApp: Robylon, which runs inside Zendesk from its Business plan at $180 a month.
The strongest Zendesk alternatives in October 2026 are Freshdesk for a like-for-like helpdesk at a lower seat price, Zoho Desk and Help Scout for smaller budgets, HubSpot Service Hub and Salesforce Service Cloud for CRM-led teams, Intercom for messenger-led support, Front for B2B shared inboxes and Gorgias for Shopify stores. Robylon fits teams that want to keep Zendesk and add an AI agent that resolves tickets across email, chat, voice and WhatsApp.
Zendesk is a deep helpdesk with an AI agent on every plan. Teams evaluating or running it look elsewhere when seat prices climb with each suite tier, when the AI agent bills per automated resolution under two pricing models at once, or when Copilot adds $50 per agent. The Zendesk email automation review covers email on its own. Every tool below is judged on three things: whether its AI takes the action a ticket needs, whether every channel runs from one setup, and whether it fits the stack you already run.

What Zendesk does
Zendesk is a customer service suite with ticketing, messaging and live chat, voice through Zendesk Talk, a help center and reporting. Since a rollout between May and June 2026, AI agents that answer and take actions in external systems are on every Suite and Support plan, each agent serving one channel type: messaging, email or voice. Teams pay per agent seat, from $19 a month billed annually on Support Team (email only) and $55 on Suite Team, and the AI agent bills per automated resolution.
Why teams look beyond Zendesk
Seat price rises by tier
Suite Team costs $55 per agent a month billed annually or $69 monthly, and Suite Professional $115 or $149; Enterprise is quoted by sales. Skills-based routing, IVR, App Builder and a committed data center location start on Suite Professional, so a 10-agent team that needs them pays $1,150 a month billed annually before any AI. Copilot adds $50 per agent a month.
Two AI pricing models
Zendesk’s pricing page sells automated resolutions at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, with 5 included per agent a month on Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional. The help centre says a resolution allowance model from 18 May 2026 replaces that, but the allowance upgrade article calls its sample prices placeholders and leaves transition pricing to sales.
Resolutions judged afterwards
An LLM check after the conversation ends decides whether it counts as a verified resolution: 2 to 72 hours after the first message on messaging, 72 hours on email. A messaging handoff that fails because no agent is available is recorded as an automated resolution, which makes the AI bill harder to predict.
One channel type per agent
Each Zendesk AI agent serves one channel type, so covering messaging, email and voice means building three agents. Voice AI agents, generally available from 1 to 10 September 2026, need Zendesk Talk and add a $0.005 per minute connection charge and telephony rates.
Legacy bots retire in 2027
AI agents Essential and legacy bots entered maintenance mode on 31 August 2026, and Zendesk’s migration notice forces migration in January and February 2027. Teams that must rebuild their flows anyway often compare first.
Two paths away from Zendesk
Leaving Zendesk means one of two things, and they lead to different tools.
- Keep the Zendesk helpdesk and change the AI agent. The team stays in Zendesk and only the agent answering customers changes. Robylon answers Zendesk tickets from inside Zendesk on its Business plan. Fin runs on several other helpdesks, but Fin’s helpdesk pricing page does not name Zendesk as of October 2026. Zendesk’s own AI agents are the in-house choice.
- Replace the helpdesk. The team moves to another inbox. Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub, Salesforce Service Cloud and Front replace both the inbox and the AI agent; Gorgias does the same for Shopify stores; and Robylon’s own inbox suits teams whose human workload fits a shared inbox with tickets, SLAs and queues.
Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like replacement for a full Zendesk helpdesk, at a lower seat price.
How we compared the tools
We read each vendor’s pricing page, docs and trust page, and each tool’s G2 page, on 7 and 8 October 2026, using US prices. We did not run hands-on tests for this page.
We compared them on what the AI agent can resolve, channels covered, where each runs, billing model, setup effort, and how each works for support agents and team leads.
The 9 best Zendesk alternatives
1. Robylon
Best for: teams that want an AI agent to resolve tickets across every channel, inside the Zendesk helpdesk they keep or with Robylon’s own inbox when their human workload fits a shared inbox.
What it is for: Robylon is an AI customer support platform that resolves tickets across email, chat, voice and WhatsApp. It works standalone or alongside an existing helpdesk. It takes the action a ticket needs: agents read the systems the answer lives in, act through tools built from your APIs and connected apps, and hand anything they cannot finish to a person with the checking already done. Every channel runs from one setup. And it fits the stack you already run: Robylon answers inside Zendesk, so the team keeps its Zendesk views, macros and reports, or it runs standalone with its own inbox and optional human seats.
What the AI does:
- A triage agent routes each conversation to the sub-agent built for its topic.
- Agents call tools built from your APIs and from 32 pre-built integrations, among them Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce and Google Sheets, to look up an order, issue a refund or update an account.
- The knowledge base answers from files, Q&As, Google Drive and web pages, including a public Zendesk help center, and the KB gap report shows what it could not answer.
- Anything the agent cannot finish goes to a person with the conversation, intent and checks attached; inside Zendesk, that person picks up the ticket in Zendesk.
Channels: email, website and in-app chat, voice, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, SMS through Twilio, YouTube comments, and reviews on Google Play, the App Store and Google My Business, all on the channels page. Robylon runs inside Freshdesk, Zendesk, Zoho Desk, Salesforce, Vtiger, Intercom, Freshchat, SalesIQ and Gorgias, or standalone, where its own inbox gives a human team tickets, SLAs, queues and AI Copilot on Advanced and Expert seats.
Pricing: by AI credits rather than per seat (see pricing). Starter is free with 300 credits a month (about 40 conversations, chat only); paid plans start at $25 a month for 500 credits, with WhatsApp and email on Pro; Business starts at $180 a month and adds voice phone calls and the Zendesk integration; yearly billing takes 10% off. Seats for a human team are optional, at $19 (Basic), $49 (Advanced) or $89 (Expert) a month. G2 rating: 5.0 from 42 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: running inside Zendesk, on tickets and Zendesk messaging, and voice phone calls start on Business at $180 a month. Credits per conversation vary with the AI model chosen, so cost is harder to forecast than a flat per-resolution price, and no voice price is published.
Where Zendesk does better:
- App marketplace: more than 1,800 apps and integrations, against Robylon’s 32 pre-built integrations.
- Helpdesk depth: skills-based routing, IVR and App Builder on Suite Professional, with a sandbox on Enterprise.
- Data location: hosting committed to the US, EEA, UK, Japan or Australia, free from Suite Professional; Robylon lists US data residency as available.
- Compliance breadth: ISO 42001, PCI DSS, FedRAMP LI-SaaS, ISMAP and HDS on Zendesk’s trust centre.
Pick it if: you want most tickets resolved by an AI agent across email, chat, voice and WhatsApp while your team stays in Zendesk, or you want a lighter inbox. Stay with Zendesk’s own AI agents if you want one vendor and per-resolution billing. For the head-to-head, see Robylon vs Zendesk AI.
2. Freshdesk: best like-for-like replacement
Best for: small and mid-size support teams that want Zendesk’s ticketing, help center and routing model at a lower seat price.
Freshworks sells two helpdesks: Freshdesk, email-first, and Freshdesk Omni, which adds full live chat, Instagram, WhatsApp and the Chat AI Agent. Freddy AI Agent, built in AI Agent Studio, runs agentic workflows with API actions, including pre-built integrations with Shopify, Stripe, PayPal and Wix. Data is hosted in the US, EEA, UAE, India or Australia.
What the AI does: answers and runs workflows with API actions, in more than 60 languages for chat; Chat AI Agents run only on Freshdesk Omni.
Channels: email, customer portal, web chat and Facebook Messenger; Freshdesk Omni adds Instagram and WhatsApp. Phone comes through Freshcaller, a separate Freshworks product.
Pricing: Freshdesk Growth costs $19 per agent a month billed annually ($23 monthly), Pro $55 ($66) and Enterprise $89 ($107); Freshdesk Omni costs $29 ($35), $79 ($95) and $119 ($143). Freddy AI Agent costs $49 per 100 sessions, and Copilot $29 per agent a month billed annually on Pro and Enterprise (Freshdesk pricing). G2: 4.4 from 3,777 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: a Freddy session is billed whatever the outcome, handovers included, and there is no free-forever plan, only 2 free agents for 6 months on Freshdesk.
Pick it if: you want the closest replacement for a full Zendesk helpdesk at a lower seat price. The Freshdesk alternatives guide covers the reverse decision.
3. Zoho Desk: best for low seat prices
Best for: small and mid-size teams, especially on Zoho CRM, that want the lowest seat prices.
What the AI does: Zia summarises tickets and drafts replies on Professional and Enterprise; Answer Bot answers customers from Standard; Zia Agents run custom agents on every edition, with the pre-built Desk agents on Enterprise only.
Channels: email, web forms, help centre, X, Facebook and Instagram, and from Standard live chat, WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat and LINE; phone through third-party telephony from Professional.
Pricing: Express costs $7 per user a month billed annually ($9 monthly), Standard $14 ($20), Professional $23 ($35) and Enterprise $40 ($50); Zia Agents on Zoho-hosted models include 30 million tokens a month, then $1 per million (Zoho Desk pricing). G2: 4.4 from 7,976 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: Zoho publishes no tokens-per-conversation figure, so the AI agent’s cost cannot be worked out in advance, and Express caps at 5 users.
Pick it if: you want a full helpdesk at the lowest seat price, or you already run Zoho CRM.
4. Help Scout: best for small teams
Best for: small and mid-size teams that want a shared inbox, a knowledge base and a chat widget with little setup.
Help Scout combines a shared inbox, Docs knowledge base sites and the Beacon chat widget, free for up to 5 users. AI Answers charges nothing when the customer asks for more help.
What the AI does: answers only, in the Beacon widget, in more than 50 languages; AI Answers on email is listed as “Coming soon” in October 2026.
Channels: email, live chat, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and SMS through your own Twilio number; phone through Aircall.
Pricing: Standard costs $25 per user a month billed annually ($30 monthly), Plus $45 ($54) and Pro $75 ($90) with a 10-user minimum; AI Answers adds $0.75 per resolution (Help Scout pricing). G2: 4.4 from 431 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: the AI takes no actions in other systems, and Standard caps at 25 users.
Pick it if: you are a small team that wants a clean inbox and help center at a low price.
5. Intercom: best for messenger-led support
Best for: teams that run support through a messenger and want proactive messaging and an AI agent from one vendor.
Intercom is the helpdesk sold by Fin (formerly Intercom), renamed on 12 May 2026. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin on 10 September 2026, so Intercom and Salesforce Service Cloud now share an owner.
What the AI does: Fin AI Agent answers from your knowledge sources and acts through Procedures that call any REST API, in more than 45 languages for chat, email and social messaging.
Channels: Messenger live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Slack and Discord; phone through Fin Voice for select customers, through sales.
Pricing: Advanced costs $85 per seat a month billed annually ($99 monthly) and Expert $132 ($139); Fin AI Agent adds $0.99 per outcome (Intercom pricing). G2: 4.5 from 3,918 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: SSO, HIPAA support and SLAs need the Expert seat, and Intercom publishes no voice price.
Pick it if: your team runs support and onboarding through a messenger, with product tours and proactive messages from Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month.
6. HubSpot Service Hub: best for HubSpot CRM teams
Best for: teams already running sales and marketing on HubSpot that want tickets on the same customer record.
HubSpot Service Hub puts ticketing, a help desk workspace, a knowledge base and a customer portal on HubSpot’s CRM. Its customer agent moved to $0.50 per resolved conversation on 14 April 2026.
What the AI does: the customer agent answers from the knowledge base, web pages and files, and runs up to 20 configured actions, from updating a CRM object or booking a meeting to custom API requests; voice is a public beta for inbound calls.
Channels: email, live chat, forms, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp (Professional and Enterprise, up to 1,000 messages a month) and calling; SMS in beta through a Twilio add-on.
Pricing: Starter lists at $20 per seat a month ($7 billed annually as a limited-time offer for new customers), Professional $90 billed annually and Enterprise $150; the customer agent uses 50 credits ($0.50) per resolution, with 3,000 credits a month included on Professional (HubSpot Service Hub pricing). G2: 4.4 from 3,018 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: the customer agent needs Professional, which carries an annual commitment even when paid monthly, and included credits are shared with every other credit feature.
Pick it if: your company already runs on HubSpot and wants support on the same CRM record as sales and marketing.
7. Salesforce Service Cloud: best for CRM-led enterprises
Best for: mid-market and enterprise teams that run their customer data in Salesforce.
Agentforce for Service acts through Flows, Apex, MuleSoft API connectors and MCP servers, and Casey, the ready-made help agent, is billed only when it resolves the issue.
What the AI does: Agentforce answers from Salesforce Knowledge and Data 360 and takes actions in Salesforce and connected systems; Agentforce Voice works in English (US, UK and Australia) as of October 2026.
Channels: web chat, in-app, help sites and portals, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Apple Messages for Business, LINE and voice.
Pricing: editions cost $25 (Starter Suite), $100 (Pro Suite), $195 (Core), $395 (Advanced) and $550 (Max) per user a month billed annually; Agentforce costs $2 per conversation or $2 per resolution for Casey (Agentforce pricing). G2: 4.4 from 8,433 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: Agentforce for Service needs the $195 Core edition or above, chat handovers on Core need Contact Center Digital at $75 per user a month, and Salesforce’s pages list no email channel for the customer-facing agent as of October 2026.
Pick it if: your company already runs on Salesforce and wants support inside the CRM.
8. Front: best for B2B shared inboxes
Best for: B2B teams whose customer work spans support, operations and account management in one shared inbox.
Front serves more than 9,300 businesses and, since 6 October 2026, hosts other vendors’ AI agents on every plan at no charge.
What the AI does: Autopilot, a paid add-on, tags, routes, drafts and sends replies inside Front and updates records in other systems through Connectors; it is optimised for English only.
Channels: email, Front Chat, customer portal, web forms, Slack, Facebook, Instagram, X and Telegram; WhatsApp through an add-on or partners; SMS and voice through integrations.
Pricing: Starter costs $25 per seat a month billed annually ($35 monthly), Professional $65 ($85) and Enterprise $105, annual only; Autopilot charges each conversation once, $0.05 for Triage, $0.39 for Handoff or $0.89 for Resolution (Front pricing). G2: 4.7 from 2,515 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: Starter takes one channel type and caps at 10 seats, and a conversation Autopilot drafted on before handing over still costs $0.39.
Pick it if: several teams answer customers together and most of the work arrives by email.
9. Gorgias: best for Shopify stores
Best for: Shopify brands that want a helpdesk built around the store and priced by tickets.
Gorgias prices by tickets, from 50 a month on Starter to 5,000 on Advanced. On Basic and above its AI Agent cancels, edits, reships and annotates Shopify orders.
What the AI does: answers and acts on Shopify orders and on Loop Returns, Recharge, Skio, Loop Subscriptions, ShipStation, ShipBob, ShipHero and ShipMonk; it needs a connected Shopify store.
Channels: email, chat, help center, contact forms, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp; voice and SMS through paid add-ons.
Pricing: Starter costs $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic $50 a month billed annually for 300 and Pro $300 for 2,000; AI Agent adds $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction on top of the ticket fee (Gorgias pricing). G2: 4.6 from 582 reviews (G2, October 2026).
Where it falls short: an AI-resolved ticket is billed twice, as a ticket and as an automated interaction, and Gorgias’s docs list no AI Agent on voice as of October 2026.
Pick it if: you run a Shopify store and want a helpdesk priced by tickets, not seats.

What to decide before switching
Actions versus answers
Count the share of tickets that need an action in another system rather than an answer. If most need actions, shortlist Robylon, Freshdesk, HubSpot Service Hub, Salesforce Service Cloud, Intercom, Front, and Gorgias for Shopify stores. If most need answers, Help Scout and Zoho Desk cover it at lower cost.
Channels your customers use
List your customers’ channels, voice included. Robylon includes voice phone calls from Business, HubSpot’s agent takes calls in beta, and Salesforce has Agentforce Voice in English. Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout and Front route phone through Freshcaller or third-party telephony, and Gorgias sells voice as an add-on.
Where your team works
Decide whether your human team leaves Zendesk. If it stays, change only the AI agent. If it moves, check that the new helpdesk has the controls you use today: SLAs, skills-based routing, IVR, a sandbox and a committed data location.
Pricing at your volume
Seat counts and AI usage both drive cost, and the billing units differ. On published prices for 3,000 chat and email conversations a month, 60% resolved by the AI (1,800 resolutions), 3 human agents and monthly billing:
| Tool | Option | AI cost a month | Seats a month | Total a month | AI cost per resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Robylon | Business, Basic seats | $625.00 | $57.00 | $682.00 | $0.35 |
| HubSpot Service Hub | Customer agent, Professional seats | $870.00 | $300.00 | $1,170.00 | $0.48 |
| Help Scout | AI Answers, Standard seats | $1,350.00 | $90.00 | $1,440.00 | $0.75 |
| Freshdesk | Freddy AI Agent, Omni Growth seats | $1,470.00 | $105.00 | $1,575.00 | $0.82 |
| Intercom | Fin, Advanced seats | $1,782.00 | $297.00 | $2,079.00 | $0.99 |
| Front | Autopilot, Professional seats | $2,070.00 | $255.00 | $2,325.00 | $1.15 |
| Gorgias | Pro with AI Agent | $2,520.00 | Not counted | $2,520.00 | $1.40 |
| Zendesk | AI agents, Suite Team seats, pay-as-you-go | $3,570.00 | $207.00 | $3,777.00 | $1.98 |
Robylon’s figure is 3,000 conversations at about 7.5 credits each: the Business 10,000-credit tier at $300 plus 13 extra 1,000-credit bundles at $25, and 3 Basic seats at $19. On yearly billing, Zendesk’s committed price brings it to $2,842.50 a month and Robylon to $652.00, and Salesforce Service Cloud, billed annually only, comes to $4,410.00 with Casey on Core plus Contact Center Digital seats. Zoho Desk is left out, because Zia Agents bill by tokens with no published tokens-per-conversation figure.
When to stay on Zendesk
- You rely on several of the 1,800+ marketplace apps, or on custom apps built with App Builder.
- You need hosting committed to the EEA, UK, Japan or Australia, which Suite Professional includes.
- You need FedRAMP LI-SaaS, ISMAP, PCI DSS or HDS.
- Your phone support runs on Zendesk Talk with IVR.
- Your team is fluent in Zendesk and the cost gap is small at your seat count.
What usually drives a switch is seat cost or an AI bill that is hard to predict. A team whose only problem is the AI agent can keep the helpdesk.
Adding an AI agent to Zendesk
Robylon connects to Zendesk as a channel and answers Zendesk tickets while the team keeps working there. On the Business plan:
- Baseline tickets a month, resolution rate, CSAT and what Zendesk’s automated resolutions cost now.
- Sync your public Zendesk help center as a web page source.
- Connect Zendesk with its API details, add it as a workflow trigger and pick the agent (how a conversation reaches an AI agent).
- Connect the systems the agent acts in. For “where is my order” emails, a Shopify tool looks up the order and replies on the Zendesk ticket.
- Build the top intents first and test them in bulk.
- Start with one ticket type, with Zendesk’s own AI agent off for it.
- Compare against the baseline after two to four weeks, then widen.
- Keep the Zendesk AI agent configuration for 30 days in case you roll back.
Zendesk AI pricing per resolution covers the cost side.
Choosing a Zendesk alternative
Zendesk is a mature helpdesk with a large marketplace, broad compliance and an AI agent on every plan. For a team that uses that depth and can predict its AI bill, it remains a reasonable home.
Move when seat prices or AI billing outgrow your budget. Freshdesk is the closest full replacement, Zoho Desk and Help Scout cost less, and HubSpot Service Hub and Salesforce Service Cloud fit CRM-led teams. Robylon suits teams that want the agent to take the action a ticket needs, run every channel from one setup and fit the stack they already run, Zendesk included, and its Starter plan is free to try.
