The 11 best AI email support agents in 2026

Eleven AI agents that answer and resolve customer support email, grouped into four kinds and compared on actions, channels, where each runs and how each bills, with prices checked in October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Keep your helpdesk and add an agent that answers email and acts in your systems: Robylon (paid plans from $25 a month) or Fin ($0.99 per outcome).
  • Staying on your helpdesk's own AI: Zendesk at $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution, Freshdesk at $49 per 100 sessions, Front at $0.05 to $0.89 per conversation.
  • Shopify store answering order emails: Gorgias AI Agent, at $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction plus the helpdesk ticket fee.
  • Enterprise buying through sales, with procurement and compliance reviews: Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra or Ada, all quote only as of October 2026.
  • At 3,000 conversations a month with 60% resolved, the monthly bill ranges from $682 (Robylon) to $3,777 (Zendesk pay-as-you-go) on published prices.

An AI email support agent reads incoming customer email, answers it from your help content and takes the action the request needs, such as a refund, an address change or an order lookup, before handing anything it cannot finish to a person. The strongest choices depend on where your team works: Robylon or Fin if you keep your helpdesk and add an agent, Zendesk, Freshdesk or Front if you want the AI your helpdesk already sells, Gorgias for a Shopify store, and Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra or Ada for an enterprise buying through sales.

This list covers agents that answer customer email for a support team. For assistants that sort and draft in your own inbox, Superhuman, Gemini in Gmail and Copilot in Outlook are the usual choices. The eleven tools below are compared on what the agent resolves without a person, the channels beyond email, the helpdesks it works inside and how it bills, with prices checked in October 2026. Robylon’s case rests on three points: its AI email agent takes the action a ticket needs, runs every channel from one setup, and fits the helpdesk you already run.

What email support agents must handle

Email is slower, longer and messier than chat, and an agent built for a chat widget breaks on it in predictable places.

  • Replies that arrive days later. A customer answers a support email hours or days after the last message, and the agent has to attach that reply to the right ticket with its history. Freshdesk counts every AI interaction with one customer in a 72-hour window as one email session, and Zendesk waits 72 hours on email before it judges whether the AI resolved a conversation: the thread is the unit, not the message.
  • Several requests in one message. One email often asks about an order, a refund and an address change at once. An agent that answers only the first question leaves a second ticket behind it.
  • Attachments. Receipts, screenshots and photos of damaged items arrive as attachments, and the answer often depends on them. Robylon reads attachments of up to 30 MB each and 40 MB per email.
  • Actions in other systems. “Where is my order” needs an order lookup and “I want a refund” needs a refund, not an article about the refund policy. Gartner predicts that by 2029 agentic AI will resolve 80% of common customer service issues without a human, which is only possible for agents that can act (Gartner, 5 March 2025).
  • Mail that must not be answered. Bounces, auto-replies, out-of-office messages and mailing lists reach a support address every day, and an agent that replies to them starts loops. Robylon’s email channel skips them before the AI sees a ticket.

Kinds of AI email support agents

AI email support agents come in four kinds, and they suit different teams.

Agents that work inside your helpdesk

Standalone agents with published self-serve prices that answer email in the helpdesk your team already uses, or in their own inbox. Robylon and Fin are this kind. Both answer and act in other systems. Robylon runs inside Freshdesk, Zendesk, Zoho Desk, Salesforce, Vtiger and Gorgias; Fin runs inside Salesforce Service Cloud, HubSpot, Freshdesk and Freshchat, and other helpdesks through sales.

AI built into the helpdesk

The helpdesk vendor’s own agent, sold with its seats and working only in that helpdesk. Zendesk, Freshdesk and Front are this kind. All three answer and act through integrations, and all three bill the AI separately from the seats.

E-commerce support agents

Agents built around a store’s order data, answering “where is my order” and editing orders. Gorgias and Klaviyo are this kind. Gorgias AI Agent works only in the Gorgias helpdesk and needs a connected Shopify store.

Enterprise AI agent platforms

Platforms sold through sales with no published price, built for high volume, many systems and long security reviews. Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra and Ada are this kind. Each answers and acts in connected systems and hands over to the helpdesk or contact centre the team keeps. The enterprise guide to AI email support covers procurement for this group.

How we chose the tools

We read each tool’s pricing page, help centre or docs, and trust page between 7 and 9 October 2026, and its G2 listing in the same week. We did not run a hands-on test of every tool. We compared them on what the agent resolves without a person, channels beyond email, the helpdesks it works inside, the billing unit and the price at a stated volume, setup effort, and security and compliance. A feature we could not confirm on the vendor’s own pages is not listed.

Three kinds of tool were left out. Hiver’s AI Agents deploy to its chat inbox and Help Scout’s AI Answers to its Beacon chat widget only, according to their own help pages in October 2026, so they appear in the guide to AI email ticketing systems instead. Salesforce’s pages list no email channel for Agentforce’s customer-facing agent as of 7 October 2026; Salesforce has owned Fin since 10 September 2026, and Fin runs inside Service Cloud. Personal inbox assistants do a different job. Billing units differ across the list, so the ranking follows fit for a support team answering email, not price.

The 11 best AI email agents

1. Robylon

Best for: support teams that want email resolved end to end, with actions in other systems, alongside chat, voice and WhatsApp from one setup.

What it is for: Robylon is an AI customer support platform that resolves tickets across email, chat, voice and WhatsApp. It works standalone or alongside an existing helpdesk. It takes the action a ticket needs: agents read the systems the answer lives in, including orders, accounts and bookings, act through tools built from your APIs and connected apps, and hand anything they cannot finish to a person with the checking already done. Every channel runs from one setup, sharing the same agents, knowledge base and analytics. And it fits the stack you already run, answering inside the helpdesk your team keeps or running standalone with its own inbox.

What the AI does:

  • Robylon checks each connected Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or DNS-verified mailbox about every minute and turns each new email into a ticket, matching replies to the right ticket by their reply headers, the ticket reference in the subject, then the subject and sender.
  • A triage agent routes each email to the sub-agent for its topic, so refunds, order status and account changes each follow their own instructions.
  • Agents call tools built from your APIs and from 32 pre-built integrations, among them Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce and Google Sheets, to look up an order, issue a refund or update an account.
  • The knowledge base answers from your sources, and the KB gap report shows the questions it could not answer (Pro plan and above).
  • Anything the agent cannot finish goes to a person with the conversation, intent and checks attached, assigned by your rules.
  • Evaluations score answers against your criteria before and after a change.

Channels: email, website and in-app chat, voice, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, SMS through Twilio, YouTube comments and app-store reviews. Robylon runs standalone with its own inbox and optional human seats, or answers inside Freshdesk, Zendesk, Zoho Desk, Salesforce, Vtiger and Gorgias tickets.

Pricing: by AI credits rather than per seat (see pricing). The Starter plan is free with 300 credits a month (about 40 conversations), paid plans start at $25 a month for 500 credits, Business starts at $180 a month, and yearly billing takes 10% off. Seats for a human team are optional, at $19 to $89 per seat a month. G2 rating: 5.0 from 42 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: the free Starter plan covers chat only, so email starts on Pro at $25 a month. Answering inside Freshdesk, Zendesk, Zoho Desk or Gorgias needs the Business plan at $180 a month. Credits per conversation vary with the AI model chosen, which makes the bill harder to forecast than a flat per-outcome price, and 42 G2 reviews is a small sample next to Fin’s 3,918.

Pick it if: you want an AI agent that resolves email and takes actions, at the lowest monthly cost of the published prices here, inside the helpdesk you keep or standalone. Pick Fin instead if you run the Intercom helpdesk or want nothing billed when a customer asks for a person.

2. Fin: best for per-outcome billing

Best for: teams that want an AI agent billed only for outcomes, on the Intercom helpdesk or on Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other helpdesks.

Fin, formerly Intercom’s AI agent and the company’s name since 12 May 2026, answers from knowledge sources and acts through Procedures: instructions in plain language with conditions, code steps and data connectors to any REST API. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin on 10 September 2026, and Fin keeps serving its existing customers. One price covers Fin on chat and email.

What the AI does: answers and takes actions through Procedures, data connectors and MCP connectors, with templates for Shopify, Stripe and Statuspage.

Channels: email, Messenger chat on web, iOS and Android, WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Slack and Discord; Fin Voice for select customers through sales. Runs on the Intercom helpdesk or inside Salesforce Service Cloud, HubSpot, Freshdesk and Freshchat.

Pricing: $0.99 per outcome on chat and email, plus Intercom seats from $85 a month billed annually (Intercom pricing); on another helpdesk, $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum. 4.5 from 3,918 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: some conversations a person joins are still billed: a teammate joining after Fin answered, or a frustrated customer who leaves without asking for more help, counts as an outcome under Fin’s outcome rules.

Pick it if: you run the Intercom helpdesk, or want per-outcome billing on Salesforce or HubSpot; Fin on HubSpot and Freshworks can be trialled self-serve. For the head-to-head, see Robylon vs Fin for email.

3. Zendesk: best for Zendesk teams

Best for: teams that run Zendesk and want its own AI agent on email, messaging and voice.

Zendesk rolled AI agents that answer and take actions out to every Suite and Support plan between May and June 2026. Agents are built from natural-language procedures and call integrations that read and write data in other systems, with reasoning controls and reporting.

What the AI does: answers and takes actions through procedures and integrations; each AI agent serves one channel type, so email and messaging need separate agents.

Channels: email, web form, messaging and live chat, mobile SDKs, voice through Zendesk Talk, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, X, LINE, WeChat and Slack. Runs in Zendesk only.

Pricing: $1.50 per committed automated resolution or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, plus agent seats from $19 a month billed annually on Support Team (Zendesk pricing). 4.3 from 7,093 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: one AI agent covers one channel type, so a team answering email and chat builds and maintains two, per Zendesk’s migration guide. At $2.00 a resolution, it is the most expensive per-resolution price on the list.

Pick it if: your team works in Zendesk and wants the AI from the same vendor.

4. Freshdesk: best for email-first budgets

Best for: small and mid-sized teams on Freshdesk’s email-first helpdesk.

Freshdesk’s Email AI Agent is built in AI Agent Studio, answers from knowledge sources and runs workflows with conditional logic and API actions, including pre-built Shopify, Stripe, PayPal and Wix actions. Freshdesk, the email-first product, gets the Email AI Agent; the Chat AI Agent needs Freshdesk Omni.

What the AI does: answers and runs agentic workflows with an Actions Library and API actions, on Growth, Pro and Enterprise.

Channels: email, customer portal, basic web chat and Facebook on Freshdesk; full live chat, Instagram and WhatsApp on Freshdesk Omni. Runs in Freshworks’ helpdesk only.

Pricing: $49 per pack of 100 AI sessions, plus seats from $19 a month billed annually on Growth (Freshdesk pricing). 4.4 from 3,777 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: a session covers every AI interaction with one customer in a 72-hour email window and is billed whatever the outcome, with no refund listed for sessions that end in a handover (Freshworks session FAQs).

Pick it if: you want a low seat price and an AI agent on email from the same vendor.

5. Gorgias: best for Shopify stores

Best for: Shopify brands whose email is mostly order status, returns and address changes.

Gorgias AI Agent answers from the help center, website and Shopify data, and takes Shopify Actions once the store is connected: cancel an unfulfilled order with a full refund and restock, edit a shipping address and more. It works as a support agent and as a shopping assistant.

What the AI does: answers and acts on Shopify orders, with app Actions and custom Actions on Basic and above.

Channels: email, chat, help center and contact forms, with Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp in open beta and SMS on an add-on. Runs in the Gorgias helpdesk only, one AI Agent per Shopify store.

Pricing: $0.90 per automated interaction on annual plans, $1.00 monthly, on top of helpdesk plans from $10 a month (Gorgias pricing). 4.6 from 582 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: it needs a connected Shopify store, and a conversation AI Agent resolves is billed twice, as an automated interaction and as a helpdesk ticket (Gorgias billing).

Pick it if: you sell on Shopify and want the helpdesk and the AI agent from one vendor built for stores.

6. Front: best for shared B2B inboxes

Best for: B2B teams whose customer email is shared across support, operations and account management.

Front’s Autopilot runs AI agents assigned conversations like a teammate, set up with instructions, knowledge, playbooks and tone. It answers from knowledge bases, websites and documents, and acts inside Front and, through Connectors, in other systems such as order management or Salesforce.

What the AI does: answers, tags, routes, drafts and sends replies, and updates records in other systems through Connectors.

Channels: email (Gmail, Office 365 and custom), Front Chat, portal and forms, Slack, Facebook, Instagram, X and Telegram. Runs in Front’s own shared inboxes only.

Pricing: each conversation is billed once at its highest outcome, $0.05 for triage, $0.39 for a handoff and $0.89 for a resolution, plus seats from $25 a month billed annually (Front pricing). 4.7 from 2,515 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: Autopilot works only in Front shared inboxes and is not sold for other helpdesks, and the Starter plan takes one channel type, so email plus chat needs Professional (Autopilot help).

Pick it if: your team already lives in a shared Front inbox and the AI should work in it.

7. Maven AGI: best for enterprise helpdesks

Best for: enterprise CX teams, including regulated ones, that want an agent on top of Zendesk, Salesforce, Freshdesk, Front or Intercom.

Maven AGI, founded in Boston in 2023, raised a $50 million Series B in June 2025. On email it reads the whole thread, sorts each message by intent and urgency, replies to routine requests itself and sends complex ones to a person with a summary. Its case studies include ClickUp, Clio and Thumbtack.

What the AI does: answers and takes multi-step actions through API calls: refunds, record updates, identity checks and order lookups, and inside Salesforce it updates cases and triggers flows.

Channels: email, web and in-app chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, voice, Slack and Microsoft Teams (Maven channels). Runs as a layer on Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud, Freshdesk, Front and Intercom.

Pricing: no published price or billing unit; the pricing link goes to a demo request. 4.7 from 43 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: Maven has no ticket inbox of its own, so the people who handle what it cannot finish need a helpdesk, and standalone email needs your own Mailgun account with a verified domain.

Pick it if: you are an enterprise keeping Zendesk, Salesforce or Freshdesk and buying through sales.

8. Decagon: best for enterprise helpdesk email

Best for: enterprise support teams that buy through sales and run email through Zendesk or Intercom.

Decagon’s agents follow Agent Operating Procedures, instructions written in natural language that verify identity, issue refunds and take payments in connected systems. Its customers include Chime, Duolingo and Rippling, and it raised $250 million at a $4.5 billion valuation in January 2026.

What the AI does: answers and acts in connected systems through pre-built connectors, APIs and MCP, with no published plan tiers.

Channels: email, voice, web and mobile chat, SMS and WhatsApp. Handles email through Zendesk and Intercom, and syncs tickets with Salesforce.

Pricing: per conversation or per resolution, with no published rate (Decagon on pricing). 4.8 from 29 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: Decagon’s email agent page connects through Intercom, Zendesk and Salesforce inboxes, and there is no self-serve signup or published price.

Pick it if: you are an enterprise on Zendesk or Intercom buying through a sales process.

9. Sierra: best for regulated enterprises

Best for: large, often regulated enterprises that want the vendor’s team to build the agent with them.

Sierra builds agents that answer and take actions in systems of record, including returns, insurance claims and mortgage origination, in Agent Studio without code. Sierra says it works with almost 50% of the Fortune 50.

What the AI does: answers and acts in order management, CRM and payment systems through 40+ pre-built and custom integrations.

Channels: email, voice, web and mobile chat, WhatsApp, Apple Business Chat, SMS and a ChatGPT app (Sierra channels). Runs in front of the existing contact centre.

Pricing: per outcome, with most escalations carrying no charge, by contract (Sierra on pricing). 4.5 from 131 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: no published price or self-serve signup, and the docs sit behind a login, so there is nothing to evaluate before a sales call.

Pick it if: you are a large enterprise, possibly regulated, that wants Sierra’s team involved in the build.

10. Ada: best for in-house CX teams

Best for: enterprise CX teams that want to run and change the agent themselves, without engineering.

Ada’s single Reasoning Engine serves chat, email, voice and social, answers from knowledge in 60 languages and acts through API, code and MCP tools. Ada cites 350+ businesses in 85+ countries.

What the AI does: answers and acts through Ada Computer tools, with playbooks for multi-step workflows and built-in PII redaction.

Channels: email, web and in-app chat, voice and Instagram (Ada email). Hands conversations to Zendesk, Salesforce, Gorgias, Freshchat and other helpdesks.

Pricing: per conversation for most customers, per resolution for some enterprises, by quote (Ada platform). 4.6 from 174 reviews (G2, October 2026).

Where it falls short: under conversation pricing every conversation is billed, including the ones handed to a person, and there is no published price.

Pick it if: your CX team wants to own the agent day to day and buys through sales.

11. Klaviyo: best for Klaviyo brands

Best for: e-commerce brands already on Klaviyo for marketing that want shopper email answered from the same customer profiles.

Klaviyo’s Customer Agent answers from the brand’s website and documents, using each shopper’s Klaviyo profile and history. Customer Agent for email became generally available on 24 March 2026, and the agent detects and answers in 113 languages.

What the AI does: answers questions, tracks Shopify orders from the last 90 days, recommends products and retrieves existing coupon codes; for returns, order edits, subscriptions and loyalty it checks eligibility and links the shopper to a self-service portal, and custom tools can call any HTTP endpoint.

Channels: email, web chat, SMS and WhatsApp (Klaviyo help centre). Runs in Klaviyo only; email must be forwarded into Klaviyo.

Pricing: per resolved conversation, from $50 a month for 75 conversations, then $0.70 a conversation up to 5,000 a month (Klaviyo pricing); Klaviyo’s helpdesk is priced separately, from $10 a month for 50 tickets. Customer Agent has no G2 listing of its own; Klaviyo’s 4.6 from 1,366 reviews (G2, October 2026) rates its marketing platform.

Where it falls short: on email it hands over only to Klaviyo’s own helpdesk or to a support email address as a transcript, so a team that stays on Gorgias or Zendesk works email handovers outside its helpdesk, and a shopper who stops replying for 48 hours is billed as a resolution.

Pick it if: your brand runs its marketing on Klaviyo and wants support answers drawn from the same customer profiles.

What to decide first

Actions versus answers

Count how many of your last 100 emails needed something done in another system: an order looked up, a refund issued, an address changed. If it is most of them, shortlist only agents that act in those systems on the plan you would buy. An agent that answers from articles alone resolves the questions your help centre already answers.

Channels beyond email

Email is rarely the only channel. If customers also call or message on WhatsApp, an agent that covers those from the same setup saves building the same instructions twice; Zendesk, for one, builds a separate AI agent per channel type.

Where your team works

Decide whether the people who handle what the AI cannot will stay in their current helpdesk. If they will, choose an agent that runs inside it (Robylon, Fin, Maven AGI, Decagon, Ada). If you have no helpdesk yet and handle fewer than 1,000 emails a month, an agent with its own inbox, such as Robylon’s, is enough; a helpdesk earns its seats once the human share of the work needs queues and SLAs.

Pricing at your volume

On a standard scenario of 3,000 chat and email conversations a month, 60% resolved by the AI (1,800 resolutions), 3 human agents and monthly billing, published prices give these monthly totals: Robylon $682.00 (Business, 10,000 credits, Basic seats), Klaviyo $1,260.00 (Customer Agent, with helpdesk tickets for handovers left out), Freshdesk $1,575.00 (Freddy AI Agent on Freshdesk Omni Growth seats), Fin $1,782.00 on another helpdesk or $2,079.00 on Intercom Advanced seats, Front $2,325.00 (Autopilot, Professional seats), Gorgias $2,520.00 (Pro with AI Agent) and Zendesk $3,777.00 (Suite Team seats, pay-as-you-go resolutions). Per resolution, that is $0.35 for Robylon, $0.70 for Klaviyo, $0.82 for Freshdesk, $0.99 for Fin, $1.15 for Front, $1.40 for Gorgias and $1.98 for Zendesk. Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra and Ada quote by contract.

The billing unit decides more than the headline price. Per-session and per-credit pricing charges for conversations the AI hands over; per-outcome pricing charges only when the AI finishes, so it costs more per resolution and less on hard weeks.

Choosing an AI email support agent

Match the segment to where your team works. A team keeping its helpdesk gets the most from an agent that runs inside it, Robylon or Fin; a team that wants one vendor takes its helpdesk’s own AI from Zendesk, Freshdesk or Front; a Shopify store starts with Gorgias; and an enterprise with a procurement process shortlists Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra and Ada.

Robylon is the pick when email is one of several channels and the agent has to act, not just answer. It takes the action a ticket needs, runs email, chat, voice and WhatsApp from one setup, and fits the helpdesk you already run, with a free Starter plan to try the agent on chat before email goes live on Pro.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI email support agent for a small team?

Robylon suits a small team that wants email answered and resolved without buying a helpdesk first: it connects a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 mailbox directly, and email starts on the Pro plan at $25 a month. Freshdesk suits a team that wants a full helpdesk, from $19 a seat billed annually.

Which AI email support agents work inside Zendesk?

Robylon answers Zendesk email tickets while the team keeps working in Zendesk, on its Business plan from $180 a month. Decagon and Ada also hand over to Zendesk, by quote. Zendesk's own AI agents handle email too, at $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution.

What does an AI email support agent cost?

Robylon came to $682 a month at 3,000 conversations with 60% resolved and three human seats, the lowest of the published prices compared here. Fin came to $2,079 on Intercom seats, Freshdesk to $1,575 and Zendesk to $3,777 on pay-as-you-go resolutions. Maven AGI, Decagon, Sierra and Ada quote by contract.

How do AI email support agents bill?

Fin bills per outcome at $0.99, and Zendesk per automated resolution at $1.50 to $2.00. Freshdesk bills per session, a 72-hour window on email, whatever the outcome. Gorgias bills per automated interaction plus a ticket fee, Robylon per credit, and the enterprise platforms by contract.

Do I need a helpdesk to use an AI email support agent?

Robylon does not need one: it connects your support mailbox, turns each email into a ticket and gives the people who handle the rest its own inbox, with seats from $19 a month. Fin, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front and Gorgias each come with their own helpdesk, priced per seat or per ticket.

Can an AI email support agent process refunds?

Gorgias AI Agent can cancel an unfulfilled Shopify order with a full refund once Shopify is connected. Robylon and Fin issue refunds through tools or Procedures built on your own systems, and Zendesk, Freshdesk and Front act through their integrations. A refund needs an action, which an agent that only answers from articles cannot take.

Which AI email support agent is best for Shopify stores?

Gorgias AI Agent is built for Shopify stores and edits, cancels and refunds orders inside Gorgias, at $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction. Robylon fits a store that also needs voice or WhatsApp, or wants to keep another helpdesk, and its Shopify app starts on the Pro plan.

Can AI resolve support email tickets without a human?

Robylon, Fin, Zendesk's AI agents and the enterprise platforms resolve an email ticket end to end when the answer is in your help content or one action in a connected system finishes it. Gartner predicts agentic AI will resolve 80% of common customer service issues without a human by 2029.

Are AI email assistants the same as AI email support agents?

Superhuman, Gemini in Gmail and Copilot in Outlook are AI email assistants: they sort, summarise and draft replies in one person's inbox. An AI email support agent such as Robylon, Fin or Zendesk's AI agents answers customers from a shared support address and resolves the request on the team's behalf.
